History lesson
As you head out to Carolina North Forest, keep in mind that this island of trees between Carrboro and Chapel Hill was donated to UNC by philosophy professor Horace Williams. It was his farm and he would ride his horse from downtown Chapel Hill after classes and take refuge in his “temple of trees.” When UNC staffed a Forest management program the TrailHeads proposed these runs to build awareness of the space and donate proceeds for trail maintenance and enhancement. Your donations go to a budget line for the Forest. So, the services you see out there, from the porta-jons to trail armoring and rerouting around stream beds are funded, in part, by you! (Pause and give self hug). We also partner with Triangle Off Road Cyclists who coordinate trail workdays with forest manager, Greg Kopsch. The trails are constantly being improved by master builders and one goal is to make them accessible 24 hours after heavy rains.
Over the past twenty years the TrailHeads have gathered on these trails and encountered all sorts of wildlife – from snakes and turtles, to coyotes, deer and fox, and our feathered friends, the barred owls, hawks, pileated woodpeckers and so many others with such lovely voices. And so much diverse plant life…and mushrooms! Through the years we’ve also heard the voice of the Forest in our hearts. This space is open and inclusive of everyone – those tree branches reach out and the roots are connected in a massive network, a community that works together and quietly welcomes us as visitors and friends. While you’re “out there” celebrate the space, pause and consider your presence and savor Nature’s reach. Have fun, hug a tree…and keep an eye out for the Unicorns. Remember, even if you don’t see them, it doesn’t mean they don’t see you!
